What does SEO and SERP Stand for?
Search Engine Optimisation, which I am sure, has cleared up all the confusion you might have had. SEO may stand for search engine optimisation but what it actually means is to get your website as high as possible on a search engine results page (SERP) like Google or Bing as shown below.
What does SERP stand for and what does that mean?
SERP = Search Engine Results Page. When you go to a search engine and type something in, the results page is called a SERP.
This is a typical looking SERP below. I have typed into the search bar 'Dentists in Hamilton' which has pulled up the following results.
As a side note, Google changed the look of their SERPs earlier this year and put the ads that were on the right, on the top of the page.
They put the ads at the top for a couple of reasons, people will always click the results at the top of the page and their ads are one of the biggest ways Google makes their money. So the better results they get from their ads (by putting the ads at the top) the more they can justify their costs.

Even though paid ads are at the top, organic results still out perform them for click-through rates (CTR). Studies say that this is due to an element of distrust because anyone can pay money to get their ad to the top, compared to having to meet a lot of criteria to get to the top of an organic search result.

Understanding the elements that make up SEO
Is the most important aspect of all the different parts within SEO. On-page looks at your website and optimises it for the keywords you are wanting to rank for. Once you have done your keyword research and found the high traffic search terms you want to rank for, you use these terms in your URL's, H1 - H5 titles, meta descriptions, content, alt tags and so on.
Google will penalise you though if you use the exact same term everywhere. The good news is their algorithms are smart enough to know the context in which you have written them. For example, if you wanted to rank for 'dentists in Hamilton' then in your content you could write, 'Hamilton dentists,...' or 'in Hamilton all dentists...' or 'the dentists in Hamilton...' and so on. They don't need to be in the exact same order as the keyword.
This is where having good quality and consistent content marketing can drastically help your SEO. It not only allows you to add value to your customers through relevant information but allows you to keep using your keywords in your produced content to help reinforce your website to the search engines.
Works with things outside of your website. It concentrates on getting as many links from other people's websites to your website. This builds your authority and the bigger the company that links to you, the more it will affect your ranking. For example, having one link from CNN would be better than a link from multiple smaller sites.
It used to be that quantity ruled over quality but that has changed. As you can see from the above diagram, having large trusted and authoritative sites linking to you will give you better results than having a range of small sites. Not all links are rated the same and it goes along the same principals as influencer marketing. Search engines pay more attention to the celebrities of the website world and those who wield more power, get more ranking power.
Is a great way to promote your business to customers that are looking for your products or services right there and then. On a search results page, it shows a map of the area they are in and the businesses closest to them. Customers that use this usually require services immediately so this is a great source of incoming leads.
Black Hat SEO Techniques
Is the dark side of SEO by doing things that go against search engine rules and guidelines. There are ways of tricking search engines to think that the site is more important that it actually is. Some examples of this are using unrelated keywords, keyword stacking or keyword stuffing, tiny text, hidden text or hidden links, cloaking, doorway or gateway pages, duplicate content or mirror sites and so on. All of these will get your website banned and makes it very hard to recover from. You do need to watch out for the 'too good to be true' deals from companies. We will get you to the top spot in Google in only 2 weeks etc.
They might sound great but the impact they could have on your site isn't worth the risk. It is best to stay with reputable companies that don't offer you the world in very quick time frames.
White Hat SEO Techniques
White Hat SEO is the opposite of Black Hat SEO surprise surprise. White Hat SEO refers to optimising your website so you get a higher position in a SERP. Doing all of this while maintaining the integrity of your website and staying within the search engines guides or terms of services.
